About Rotary

Rotary's work in Congleton

The Rotary Club of Congleton was formed back in 1947. The club welcomes people with spare time who wants to give something back to the community. The emphasis is not only on raising money to help worthy causes and local charities, but on being actively involved. Rotary-Congleton runs a program of events in the town as well as helping the town council with some of their events. In addition, the club has a comprehensive program of youth activities working with local schools. The environment team works with other groups, leading with ideas to protect wildlife.

Rotary-Congleton Club members believe that an essential part of the Rotary’s ethos is helping the local the community.  A couple of examples of this is where members regularly visit patients in the local hospital and the visit of Santa to the nursing and care homes in the town , both are always well supported by members

Rotary International

Every Rotarian sets his or her own horizons. Enthusiasm has no boundaries and any member can take part in District, National or even International Rotary projects anywhere in the world.

Rotary was formed in America by a group of businessmen. They recognised a responsibility to their community. They raised money and performed philanthropic deeds. Their idea was copied and grew throughout the world. The Rotary organisation is now active in all major towns, with 36,000 clubs in more than 200 countries worldwide. Rotary-Congleton has been actively involved in the life of the town since 1947 and plays its part in the wider international projects.

For more detailed information on Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland as well as Rotary International see the links at the bottom of the page. Here are some examples of Rotary International’s involvement in world events.

The Rotary Foundation

Rotary has its own charity, The Rotary Foundation. It’s multi $bn fund makes it one of the world’s top charities respected by governments, supporting Peace, Education, Health, The Environment and Disaster Recovery.

Every Rotary member contributed to building its multi $bn fund making it one of a handful of truly global charities. Trustees manage the fund and spend the massive interest raised in supporting worldwide initiatives.

The Fight Against Polio

Rotary instigated a worldwide plan to inoculate every child under 5 in a bid to eliminate the scourge of poliomyelitis. Now supported and price-matched by the Gates Foundation and implemented by UNICEF, the ongoing program has reduced infections to small and isolated pockets. The campaign must continue in order to prevent future outbreaks.

Education

Rotary supports education in top universities with bursaries, helping to develop professional skills and also training diplomats as part of a program working with governments to promote peace. In the developing world, Rotary supports educational initiatives. Here in Congleton Rotary has an active Youth program, working with schools, adding content and inspiration to the syllabus. The club also works with youth groups, clubs and societies.

Disaster Aid

Each natural disaster promotes a reaction in the most appropriate way, utilising Rotary’s local experience in the region as well as providing financial support. Recently, Turkey, Syria and Ukraine, each received practical help in different ways. Support provided by Shelter Box, a Rotary supported charity, dispatches pre-prepared food and immediate supplies to emergencies where they are needed.

Drinking Water

Rotary is actively involved with teams throughout third- world countries drilling wells and providing clean drinking water, helping to combat water-borne diseases.

Promoting Peace

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
