The Tree of Light in Congleton is a cherished annual tradition, organised by the Rotary Club of Congleton to provide a heartfelt way for the community to honour and remember loved ones during the festive season.
Introduced in 2019, this initiative invites residents to inscribe personal messages on weatherproof biodegradable decorations , which are then displayed around a beautifully illuminated Christmas tree. Located in the Community Garden on Lawton Street, the tree serves as a serene space for reflection and remembrance, creating a meaningful centrepiece for Congleton’s holiday celebrations.
Since its inception, the Tree of Light has become a permanent fixture in Congleton’s Christmas calendar. The project was inspired by similar initiatives across the country and took on new significance with the planting of a living Christmas tree in 2020, dedicated to the memory of Rotarian Alan Parton.
The tree is illuminated annually during a special ceremony on the last Saturday of November, marking the start of the festive season. Proceeds from the sale of Decorations support local charitable activities, reinforcing the Rotary Club’s mission to uplift the community.
Taking part in the Tree of Light is easy and deeply meaningful. Decorations can be purchased from the Congleton Information Centre located in the Town Hall. Each wooden shape offers a personal way to honour loved ones and contribute to a shared celebration of community and remembrance.
The tree remains illuminated throughout the holiday season, offering a welcoming space for reflection and unity.
The biodegradable decorations you purchase do more than just light up the Tree of Light – they create a lasting impact. Funds raised support a range of local Rotary Club projects, including supporting local schools, providing disaster relief, funding medical research, and more.
Whether you are remembering a loved one or simply participating in a community tradition, you are helping to improve the lives of people within Congleton and further afield.
